Press Play for Pre-School

At pre-school level, we use Murphy Reading; a fun, fast and enjoyable way to introduce children to reading. This programme is suitable for children aged 4-6 and can be used for:

  • Children who are starter readers (pre-school or early school)
  • Children who are struggling to read using traditional methods

The parent and child can complete this programme in a 4-6 week period playing the games each day for only 20 minutes a day.

Many traditional reading methods rely on teaching children to sound out individual words and teach word identification only. The Murphy Reading programme is a phonetic free approach to reading and uses a multi-sensory approach to help children develop reading skills for comprehension easily using fun, simple games.

The Murphy Reading games are designed to help develop the Visual Memory System in a step-by-step approach. By using aspects of Visual Memory the children can learn:

  • To rely on their long-term Visual Memory to retain the words
  • To make a “mental video” while reading and begin to enjoy reading big long fun sentences very early on in the programme
  • To construct their own big long sentences for fun
  • How to recognise and form all their letters easily
  • How to spell and write words easily

The full set of 30 games with the word cards are contained in the book Murphy Reading.
